Want to Support Democracy (With a Side of Fun) This Summer?

The LWVAA event calendar is here to help!

  • July 21: Attend the Rally for Flood Relief hosted by Hands Off Central Texas (LWVAA is a partner)
  • July 23: Zoom in for the July session of LWVUS' Democracy in Your Hands Series, Championing Issues That Matter Most to You
  • July 24: Zoom in for the July session of LWVTX's DEI training series, Ensuring Voting Accessibility for All
  • Tuesdays in July: Attend the Pan Am Hillside Concert Series. LWVAA volunteers will be there every week, registering voters.
  • July and August: Attend your Austin City Council member's town hall meeting on the 2025 - 2026 city budget. This is your chance to make your priorities known. Find your council district here, and find links to the town halls on our event calendar
  • July 24: Attend the Austin City Council meeting. 
  • August 1: Attend a screening of the short film Dying to Vote followed by Born in the Struggle, part of the Austin Film Society's Pan African Film Festival. LWVAA is a promotional partner for these films; keep reading for a ticket giveaway and discounts!
  • August 2: Support local organizations championing reproductive health, rights, and justice at the Reproductive Access Marketplace hosted by Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (LWVAA will be tabling)
  • August 14: Make plans to attend the LWVAA mixer at the Brewtorium! No speaker, just a chance to take a break and build community. The mixer is open to the public, so tell your friends and neighbors -- better yet, bring them along!
  • Are you a VDR? Find volunteer opportunities  to register voters at the Alamo Drafthouse and The Hillside Concert series.
 
Empower Voters and Support Democracy at Your Events!
  • Is an organization or business you know hosting a concert, picnic, panel, or party? Help your community get vote-ready! Request a nonpartisan LWVAA voter registration table. 📩 Email tablingrequest@lwvaustin.org.
  • Contact LWVAA co-president Debbi Voss to ask the League to co-host or to provide a speaker for an event.

🎉 The Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), the largest Black film and arts festival in the US, returns to Austin July 31 - August 3 at AFS Cinema. Don’t miss this weekend of powerful storytelling, dynamic panels, and cultural celebration.

LWVAA is teaming up with the Austin Film Society to give away a pair of tickets to the double-header screening of Born in the Struggle and Dying to Vote at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1.
 
📽️ Dying to Vote (dir. Loki Mulholland, 31m) explores the long and deadly fight for Black voting rights in the U.S., from Reconstruction to the January 6th Capitol Insurrection. Features Vernon Dahmer’s family and Rep. Bennie Thompson.
🎤 Born in the Struggle (dir. Kamasi Hill, 60m) follows the children of Black Power revolutionaries -- like Ras Baraka, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Fred Hampton Jr. -- and how they continue the legacy through culture, hip-hop, and activism.
